# Funding

Funding is a periodic payment exchanged directly between longs and shorts. It is the mechanism that keeps a contract with no expiry anchored to its reference rate.

If the perp trades above the oracle, longs pay shorts, which pushes the price back down. If it trades below, shorts pay longs. Funding is paid only on open positions.

Force inherits Hyperliquid's funding formula and applies a multiplier to it:

$$
F = m \times \Big\[ P + \mathrm{clamp}\big(i - P,; -0.0005,; 0.0005\big) \Big]
$$

where $$P$$ is the average premium index, $$i$$ is the interest-rate term, and $$m$$ is the Force funding multiplier for the market. The premium index measures how far the perp has traded from the oracle across the sampling window.
